Dr Jim Moore

Past President of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society, GP, GPSI Cardiology, Gloucestershire

Dr Moore is a GP in Gloucestershire with a special interest in Cardiovascular Medicine and President of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society since 2019. He lectures extensively in cardiovascular medicine across the UK.

He has been heavily involved in National CVD advisory groups, guidelines and working parties. He was a member of the NICE Chronic Heart Failure in Adults Guideline committee (2016-2018) and was a board member of British Society for Heart Failure.

Dr Moore has provided cardiovascular clinical support to local commissioning organisations for over two decades and more recently to Cardiac Networks in the South-West. He is currently Clinical Co-Lead (Primary Care) for the West of England Integrated Cardiac Clinical Network.

Dr Moore is the National Clinical Co- Lead (Primary Care) for the National Cardiac Transformation Programme which has included working closely on NHSE initiatives such as Managing Heart Failure @Home and more recently chaired a group that developed the National (NHSE) guidance for the Virtual Ward care for people with heart failure (in publication).

He has been involved in the establishment and subsequent development of the community-based Gloucestershire Heart Failure service since its inception in 2003 where he continues to work as a GPSI.

Professor Ahmet Fuat

PCCS Council Member and former PCCS President, Honorary Professor of Primary Care Cardiology, Durham University, GP, GP Appraiser and GPSI Cardiology, County Durham

Professor Ahmet Fuat has recently retired as a GP in Darlington, Co.Durham after 37 years in the same practice and 41 years as a qualified doctor. He will continue to work as a GPSI Cardiology running a genetic lipid service for County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust, and take up a role as Medical Director for OBEROI Consulting.

He has been a GPSI Cardiology for 26 years having undertaken a Postgraduate Diploma in Cardiology at Bradford University graduating with distinction. He started the first one-stop diagnostic and integrated heart failure clinic in the UK in 2002 with local colleagues.

He has a PhD in research in heart failure diagnosis and management, which includes work on natriuretic peptides and has generated several publications that influenced guidelines and led to his recognition as an Honorary Professor at Durham University.

He holds various roles in CVD and research including the immediate past President of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society (PCCS) which he was instrumental in reforming and current education and research lead, and GP Research Engagement lead for NENC CRN.

He has a passion for medical education and remains an active lecturer, tutor and researcher. He is a peer reviewer for most high impact Cardiovascular journals, BMJ, BJGP and research bodies. His work in community cardiology has been recognised with Fellowships from the RCGP, RCP London and RCP Edinburgh and the PCCS.

Helen Williams

National Specialty Adviser for CVD Prevention, NHSE and Consultant Pharmacist for CVD, SE London ICB and UCL Partners

Helen is the National Speciality Adviser for CVD Prevention at NHS England and is working on delivery of the national CVD ambitions for AF, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol in the NHS Long Term Plan. Helen has worked as a CVD specialist for more than 25 years across all care settings. She was clinical adviser to the national AF programme and developed the pharmacist-led virtual clinic model to optimise uptake of anticoagulation in AF, which has now been spread nationally. Helen has recently been appointed as one of the long term conditions lead for South East London Integrated Care System and is also working at UCLPartners on the implementation of proactive care frameworks for long-term conditions to support primary care in the post COVID-19 environment.

Professor Terry McCormack

President, British and Irish Hypertension Society: Professor of Primary Cardiovascular Medicine, Institute of Clinical and Applied Health Research, Hull York Medical School

Terry McCormack is a GP in Whitby, North Yorkshire, Professor of Primary Care Cardiovascular Medicine at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and President of the British and Irish Hypertension Society. He is a primary care researcher, particularly interested in hypertension, lipids and anticoagulation.

In 2020 he was the winner of the HYMS Undergraduate Medicine Phase II and III Teacher of Excellence Award. Guideline work includes the NICE Hypertension, Perioperative Care and Venous Thromboembolism guideline committees and the AAGBI/BHS preoperative BP guideline. He is an editor of the British Journal of Cardiology and a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology

Naomi Stetson

Clinical Associate, Smart Health Solutions and Independent Nurse Consultant, Hypertension

Naomi trained at UCLH, with further training at the University of Glasgow and Hertfordshire. She developed an interest in cardiovascular disease more than 25 years ago while setting up a new Hypertension Service at the Royal Free Hospital. Naomi was part of the Development group for NICE 127 and the Topic Expert Group for Hypertension. She has recently retired from the post of Lead Nurse at Peart Rose Clinic, part of Imperial Colllege Healthcare Trust, but continues to take an active part in the Nurses and Allied Professionals Working Party of the British and Irish Hypertension Society, she was awarded Fellowship of the Society in 2016 for her part in the facilitation of Project Malawi and the creation of 10 rural hypertension clinics and was a primary developer of the Omron Academy.

In the last year, Naomi turned her hand to Co-ordinating Covid -19 Support Nurses with Smart Health Solutions and vaccinating and is continuing to develop and deliver Blood Pressure related courses.

Sotiris Antoniou

Consultant Pharmacist, Cardiovascular Medicine at Barts Health NHS Trust and Lead Cardiovascular Pharmacist, UCL Partners, AHSN

Sotiris is Head of Pharmacy at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, a specialist tertiary referral centre for Cardiovascular, Oncology and respiratory services and Consultant Pharmacist at Barts Heart Centre, part of Barts Health NHS Trust. Combined with his role as Clinical Advisor for UCL Partners supports medicines optimisation across the health economy to optimise patient outcomes and address unmet local needs.

Sotiris has published extensively in the medical press and is actively involved in the training and development of clinical pharmacists. He has recently obtained NHSE Pathway transformation funding to provide a specialist Cardiovascular pharmacist working collaboratively with primary care to improve lipid modification across the locality.

Sotiris is on the board of ESC ACNAP (Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professionals) and has served on many NICE development groups including Unstable Angina/NSTEMI guideline, stable angina and STEMI guidelines and is a current NICE TA member of the highly specialist technology appraisal group. Sotiris is also an adjunct Assistant Professor at Purdue University, USA.

Dr Paul Ferenc

GP Partner, GPSI, Worcestershire and PCCS Treasurer

Graduated from Birmingham and completed foundation years in the North West., where I undertook a cardiology house job. Moved to Worcestershire to undertake GP training. Since 2015 I have been working at the local hospital in the cardiology department. Throughout this time, I have been heavily involved at primary care level in the improvement of cardiovascular disease monitoring and treatment, especially the use of anticoagulation and detection of AF.

I am lead for IHD, AF and heart failure within the practice, but also CVD lead in the PCN. I am currently a CVD Clinical Advisor for the local AHSN with the aim of improving outcomes for cardiovascular disease in the region. I also run local education sessions in cardiovascular disease.

Prof Peter Donnolly

Founder and CEO, Genomics plc and Emeritus Professor, University of Oxford

Professor Sir Peter Donnelly is a Founder and CEO of Genomics plc and Emeritus Professor of Statistical Science at the University of Oxford where he was Director of the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics from 2007-2017.

Peter played central roles in the major national and international human genetics projects of the last 20 years, including the International HapMap project and the landmark Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC) which he led, along with its successor WTCCC2, a large international collaboration studying the genetic basis of more than 20 common human diseases and conditions in over 60,000 people. He also led the genotyping of UK Biobank. Peter’s group is responsible for many widely-used statistical analysis tools for genomic data, and have made important contributions to our understanding of meiosis and of human population history.

In 2014, along with three colleagues, Peter founded Genomics plc, becoming the company’s CEO in 2017. The company uses large-scale genetic data to identify novel drug targets and understand individual risk for common human diseases in order to drive a prevention-first approach to healthcare.

Peter has received numerous awards for his research, including a knighthood in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to the understanding of human genetics in disease. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Beverley Bostock

PCCS Council Member, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Mann Cottage Surgery and PCN Nurse Coordinator, Hereford Editor in Chief, Practice Nurse Journal

Beverley is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in general practice in Gloucestershire and a PCN Nurse Coordinator in Hereford. She is also Editor in Chief of Practice Nurse journal. She qualified as an RGN at St George’s Hospital London and gained a BSc in Professional Nursing Studies after completing 2 years of an advanced clinical practice MSc at Wolverhampton University. She is an Independent Nurse Prescriber and holds an MSc in Respiratory Care and an MA in Medical Ethics and Law.

Beverley’s other qualifications include a Post Graduate Award in Diabetes Therapeutics from Warwick University.

Beverley has extensive educational experience developing modules in diabetes and CVD for an Open University-affiliated organisation and is an Expert Witness for a clinical negligence company. She has been a Queen’s Nurse since 2015, a title which is given to nurses who have demonstrated a high level of commitment to patient care and nursing practice.

Beverley is a council member for the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society and has worked on the Implementation Steering Group of Public Health England’s CVDPREVENT project and Oxford AHSN’s ‘Prevention of CVD during the pandemic’ guidance. She has also been a Visiting Lecturer in behaviour change at Imperial College London for the MSc in Preventive Cardiology.

Robin Taylor

Consultant Cardiologist, Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust

Robin Taylor is a Consultant Cardiologist at Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust. He is a general cardiologist with specialist interests in heart failure, heart rhythm disorders and pacing. He is heart failure lead for Worcestershire. Other recent interests include medicines management and developing a local cardiac obstetric service. He has a research interest in using cardiac magnetic resonance to optimise response to CRT. He is active in the field of medical education, and is a Royal College of Physicians college tutor

Dr Matt Fay

Clinical Director of Cardiology Westcliffe Health Innovations / Honorary Clinical Lecturer - Warwick Medical School

Dr Matt Fay is a General Practitioner who joined Westcliffe Medical Practice in 1999. This has developed into the Affinity Care, a 27 partner “superpractice” based in Bradford managing 8 GP contracts and providing care for over 64,000 population.

Matt is the Clinical Chair of the partnership and the clinical director of Affinity Care PCN, but still does regular GP sessions at The Willows in Queensbury. In 2001 Matthew established a GPwSI cardiology service in Bradford which has expanded to provide direct access investigations and e-consultations.

He was a member of the NICE AF Guideline Development Group and was a standing committee member of the NICE Quality Standard Advisory Committee. He is currently a clinical advisor to the AF Association, STARS (the Syncope Trust), Arrhythmia Alliance, on the Expert Advisory Panel for the Stroke Association and on the faculty for Heart Valve Voice. He is a Trustee of the AF Association and Thrombosis UK. He has been involved in service redesign of cardiovascular services with a focus on AF, dysrhythmia and moving services out of hospital for many years. He was the clinical lead of the redesign of the Bradford VTE services to make it completely community and NOAC based.

He has previously worked in Bradford’s PCTs and CCG. As a father of four he insists that he is first and foremost a family doctor.

Dr Andy Turley

Consultant Cardiologist with interest in Implantable Devices

Andrew was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at South Tees NHS Foundation Trust in 2010 and now works at split sites between The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton and The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

Andrew has a sub-specialty interest in heart failure and Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs) including permanent pacemakers, ICDs, cardiac resynchronisation therapy and implantable loop recorders plus. He holds a British Heart Rhythm Society accreditation in pacing and devices. He also has a keen interest in medical education.

Andrew is a past chair of British Heart Rhythm Society certification committee, faculty member for Heart Rhythm Congress, immediate past Chair of the North East Strategic Clinical Network – cardiac rhythm management sub group and trustee for Pace4life.

Andrew has been involved in the research of CIEDs since his consultant appointment.

John Campbell

PCCS Council Member and Nurse Practitioner with special interest in Cardiology, Woodbridge Medical Practice

John works as a nurse practitioner with specialist interest in cardiology in a busy primary care practice in Teesside. As well as providing acute minor ailments service, John maintains a role with patients with a range of long-term cardiac conditions and has special interest in atrial fibrillation.

John spent 6 years as a nurse consultant developing nurse-led services including thrombolysis in Accident and Emergency, Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, and Nurse-led Myocardial Perfusion Service, and contributed to the national development of extended nurse prescribing from its introduction in 2002.

John has worked in primary care since 2012 and was a member of the national guideline development group with the updating of the NICE guidelines for Atrial Fibrillation that were published in June 2014.

Professor Derek Connolly

Consultant Cardiologist and Director of R&D at Birmingham City Hospital

Derek is a Consultant Cardiologist at Birmingham City Hospital, Birmingham UK and holds a honorary academic positions at both the University of Birmingham Institute of cardiovascular sciences and at Aston University medical School. Derek trained in Cambridge, London, Edinburgh and San Diego where he was a Carnegie Scholar. Derek has a first class degree in Pharmacology from the University of Edinburgh where he was the Brunton medallist and Keasbey Bursary holder. Derek’s PhD in molecular cardiology is from the University of Cambridge. Derek is the Chief or Primary Investigator of multiple large trials in Cardiovascular medicine. Derek developed one of the UKs first primary angioplasty programmes, and one of the UKs largest cardiac CT programmes. He has been a council member of the PCCS since it's refoundation.

Professor Julia Newton

Medical Director, Academic Health Science Network North East and North Cumbria

Julia became Medical Director of the Academic Health Science Network, North East North Cumbria in 2017. She graduated from Newcastle University Medical School in 1990 and since then has worked in a range of roles in the North East of England. She became a Consultant Physician with an interest in Geriatric Medicine in 2000, and Clinical Professor of Ageing & Medicine at Newcastle University in 2008.

She was Dean of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences until 2015, and more recently Director of Newcastle Academic Health Partners. She has a PhD in physiological sciences from Newcastle University and her research focusses upon understanding the causes of fatigue in chronic diseases.

In her AHSN role she leads the NHSE commissioned Lipid Management and Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Programme on behalf of the AHSN Network which includes implementation and evaluation of the Child Parent Cascade Screening Clinical Pathway across 7 AHSN areas with the aim of screening 30,000 children over the next 2 years.

Dr Rushabh Shah

GPwSI in Cardiology, Nottingham

Dr Rushabh Shah is a Gp principal in Nottingham, a GPSI in cardiology and also has over ten years of experience working as clinical assistant in cardiology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust. His experience in primary and secondary care has proven to be a valuable interface both clinically and for education which he undertakes nationally.

Professor Jerry Murphy

Consultant Cardiologist, County Durham & Darlington NHS FT

Professor Murphy trained in London, Manchester, Nottingham and Leicester before being appointed to Co. Durham & Darlington Hospitals where he has worked as a consultant cardiologist for 30 years. He was made Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Durham University in 2010 and appointed Director of Research and Innovation at Co. Durham & Darlington Hospital in 2015. Professor Murphy has been a member of council at the Royal College of Physicians (London), the Heath Technology Assessment National Advisory Board and Future Hospital Commission. His research interests include all aspects of heart failure.

Professor Michael Norton

PCCS Secretary, Consultant Community Cardiologist, Visiting Professor of Community Cardiology and Deputy Medical Director, Dept of Community Cardiology, Sunderland and North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust

Professor Michael Norton is a Consultant Community Cardiologist and Visiting Professor of Community Cardiology based in the North East of England. Michael runs the Dept. of Community Cardiology in Sunderland. He is also the Deputy Medical Director of the North East Ambulance Service and is clinically active in pre-hospital emergency medicine. Michael has significant experience in syncope and related disorders having worked for over eighteen years (six as head of Department) within the Falls & Syncope Service at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. Michael’s main clinical and research interests are cardiovascular risk reduction, neuro-cardiovascular syncope and cardiac arrest. He is a director and national council member of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society. He is also the co-founder of Cardioproof, a community interest company, which aims to improve survival from cardiac arrest by increasing bystander CPR and use of public access defibrillators.

Dr Petra Jenkins

ACHD Cardiologist, NW ACHD-PHT Lead, National ACHD rep. BCCA/ NHSE/I Congenital Heart Disease Clinical Reference Group

I am a Consultant ACHD Cardiologist in the NW England, specialising in Pulmonary Hypertension and Imaging in ACHD.

I have always been interested in leadership and education from being in Med School, it’s great to get involved and work with lots of different people. These roles are personally enriching and rewarding and its fab to ‘give something back’.

My current leadership roles include:

• National ACHD representative on NHSE/I Congenital Heart Disease Clinical Reference Group

Graham Cooper

Trustee, The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust and Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

Past president of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, currently the National Clinical Advisor for Acute Aortic Dissection to NHS England. A consultant cardiac surgeon and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals with a specialist clinical interest in thoracic aortic surgery.

Catherine Fowler

Trustee, The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust

A relentless campaigner to improve diagnosis for aortic dissection following the loss of her father to an undiagnosed aortic dissection in 2015. Catherine has appeared on national radio, television and at medical conferences throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe. Co-creator and former lead of a highly successful national campaign, which has been a catalyst for change in first responder and emergency medicine.
