Dr Derek Connolly
Consultant Interventional Cardiologist
Birmingham

Dr Derek Connolly is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Birmingham City Hospital, Birmingham UK.

He trained in Cambridge, London, Edinburgh and San Diego where he was a Carnegie Scholar. He has a first class degree in Pharmacology from the University of Edinburgh where he was the Brunton medallist and Keasbey Bursary holder. His PhD in molecular cardiology is from the University of Cambridge.

He is the Chief or Primary Investigator of multiple large trials in Cardiovascular medicine.

He developed one of the UKs first primary angioplasty programmes, and one of the UKs largest cardiac CT programmes.

Dr Kevin Fernando
GP Partner
Edinburgh

Kevin Fernando is a part-time GP Partner working at the coalface in North Berwick Health Centre, near Edinburgh. Kevin is a Primary Care Diabetes Society committee member and Scottish lead. He is also a RCGP Clinical Advisor for diabetes & multi-morbidity and an alumnus of the Diabetes UK Clinical Champion programme. Kevin is also a writer and presenter for the NB Medical Education Hot Topics GP Update courses.

Kevin graduated from Edinburgh University in 2000 and holds both MRCGP and MRCP (UK) qualifications and has completed a Master’s degree in diabetes which he passed with distinction.

Kevin has been elected to Fellowship of both the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh for his work in diabetes and medical education. Kevin is also a Member of the Academy of Medical Educators.

Michael Norton
Community Cardiologist
Sunderland

Michael Norton is a Community Cardiologist based in Sunderland and employed by South Tyneside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is also Head of Department at the Falls & Syncope Service in Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. Michael is a Visiting Professor of Community Cardiology at the University of Sunderland.

Michael graduated from University College, Galway and held training posts in Dublin before moving to Newcastle upon Tyne for further training in cardiology and general medicine. On completing his hospital training and with a view to developing a Community Cardiology Service, Michael then trained in general practice on the Northumbria Vocational Training Scheme. He served as an elected council member of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society from 2010-2012 and has previously held a seat on the UK Stroke Forum Steering Committee.

Prof. Norton developed and supervises a GP Registrar training post in Community Cardiology that forms part of the regional GP Training Scheme. He has a keen interest in working with other specialties to reduce cardiovascular risk and has been involved with projects and educational meetings with colleagues from areas such as respiratory medicine, diabetes, urology, psychiatry and haematology.

His clinical interests include out of hospital cardiac arrest, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, erectile dysfunction, cardiovascular disease prevention and neurocardiovascular syncope.
