PCCS Cardiovascular HCP of the Year: Dr Muhammad Murad Khan

Dr Muhammad Murad Khan received the PCCS Cardiovascular HCP of the Year Award for developing and leading an innovative, primary care-led community cardiovascular model for patients with palpitations and PoTS in Wakefield.

The service addresses a clear unmet need, where patients with intermittent symptoms often experience delays in diagnosis and fragmented referral pathways. By embedding specialist assessment, structured triage and patient-activated ECG monitoring within the community, the pathway enables earlier diagnosis and management closer to home.

Over 12 months, the service significantly improved access to rhythm diagnostics, reduced avoidable secondary care referrals, and provided clearer diagnosis and reassurance for patients. A dedicated PoTS pathway further supported a population often affected by under-recognition and diagnostic uncertainty.

This work demonstrates how primary care-led innovation can deliver specialist-quality cardiovascular care, improving patient experience while reducing system pressure.
